Teen arrested for bringing suspected Fentanyl pills to school in Moorhead

A 13-year-old student in Moorhead was arrested after police say he brought around 1,500 pills suspected of containing fentanyl to school.

The Moorhead Police Department said that just before 12 p.m., a student at Horizon Middle School reported to staff that another student had a large number of blue pills.

School staff detained the student and the pills were safely secured. Police say that about 1,500 pills were in the 13-year-old’s possession.

Testing by the Moorhead Police Department Narcotics Unit revealed that the pills are suspected to be fentanyl-laced counterfeit M30 pills.

The child was arrested for first-degree possession of a controlled substance and was brought to the West Central Juvenile Detention Center.

“We commend the students who came forward — your actions helped protect others,” said Moorhead Police Chief Chris Helmick. “This remains an active investigation, and we will continue working closely with Moorhead Area Public Schools to strengthen safety protocols and ensure a secure learning environment for all students and staff.”

“The safety and security of our students is our highest priority,” said Moorhead Area Public Schools Superintendent Brandon Lunak. “Any possession, distribution, or involvement with illegal substances is taken extremely seriously in Moorhead Area Public Schools. Students found to be in violation of law or district policy will face appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion, and the District will cooperate fully with law enforcement in pursuing prosecution when applicable.”
