Illinois Catholic leaders condemn legalization of assisted suicide as ‘dangerous’ and ‘abhorrent’
In a development that made Illinois the 12th state in the nation to legalize physician-assisted suicide, Gov. JB Pritzker signed Senate Bill 1950 into law on Friday.
Pope Leo XIV expressed disappointment Tuesday that Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill legalizing assisted suicide, saying he asked Pritzker to veto the bill when the governor visited the Vatican last month.
Pritzker has not committed to signing the bill. Speaking in Chicago on Wednesday, he described the issue as “hard” and emphasized compassion and careful consideration.
