An 81-year-old man has been taken into custody and placed into the Goodhue County Jail after he is believed to have shot another man, seriously injuring him.

According to the Lake City Police Department, officers were called to the 1300 block of North Lakeshore Drive around 1:24 p.m. Wednesday.

The officers made contact with William Charles Piar, 81, of Lake City, who was holding a handgun behind a Subway restaurant.

Police said they attempted to negotiate with Piar to have him surrender, but said he refused to comply.

As negotiations continued, officers learned there was an injured man inside a nearby apartment, who had been shot multiple times.

Officers then used less-than-lethal bean bag shot rounds to subdue Piar and take him into custody.

The injured man was taken to the hospital once the area was safe; his injuries are considered life-threatening.

Piar was also taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. Police said he has since been released and is now being booked into the Goodhue County Jail. He does not appear on the jail roster as of Thursday afternoon.

The investigation remains ongoing.
