Charges: St. Cloud woman fatally stabbed boyfriend during argument

A 23-year-old has been charged in connection with the murder of her boyfriend.

Katerina Ivanovna Markiv faces two counts of second-degree murder. Her first court appearance is on Wednesday morning.

According to court documents, St. Cloud police were called to a home for a knife complaint just after 4 a.m. Quinton McKay Hughes, 25, told dispatchers that he had been stabbed, but that it was an accident and a “minor disagreement.” Later, Markiv spoke with dispatchers to tell them that the stab wound was on the left side of Hughes’ chest. She was also heard apologizing to Hughes.

Police found Hughes unresponsive on the floor and Markiv putting pressure on his chest. She said she didn’t mean to stab Hughes and that when “people get mad they just want to swing stuff,” and she didn’t know Hughes was that close to her, court documents state.

Officers found a bloody, eight-inch knife on the floor. The stab wound to Hughes’ chest was one to one and a half inches deep, and there was blood on his chest, neck, and face. There was also blood coming from his nose and mouth.

Despite CPR, Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Markiv told investigators that she and Hughes had begun dating in October and that Hughes was spending the night at her apartment, court documents state. She added that she had been drinking throughout the night.

Markiv said that she and Hughes got into an argument because she wanted to have sex, but he did not. She said Hughes “kinda” raised his voice at her, which caused an argument.

Markiv was trying to explain her side, but Hughes was cutting her off, so she swung the knife at him, she told investigators. She said she thought she was going to scratch him, court documents state. She also admitted to punching Hughes, but described them as light punches or taps.

She admitted to investigators that she was in a rage and has anger issues, and said Hughes never hurt her.

Two coworkers of Markiv said she was emotional and would get upset about things. One coworker said Markiv told him she “gets so crazy to the point she will kill somebody.”
