State auditor flags Byron Public Schools’ spending, finds nearly $60,000 spent without documentation

Audit flags Byron Schools spending

Byron Public Schools was sent a letter from the Office of the State Auditor on October 28 regarding concerns for a lack of credit card documentation.

As initially reported by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS sister station, KAAL, the auditor stated the district failed to provide the OSA with complete documentation to support its credit card activity.

According to the auditor, about 30% of the district’s purchases from July 1, 2023 through Dec. 18, 2024, — amounting to nearly $60,000 — had no receipts or were not itemized, as required by law.

The auditor also said school district records showed the district purchased over $4,000 in gift cards despite the local government’s use of gift cards generally being unauthorized.

Because of the limited information provided, the auditor said the OSA cannot determine whether these purchases were made for district purposes.

The district was recommended to create stronger policies and oversight to keep track of spending.
