The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what happened after human remains were discovered in Minden Township outside of St. Cloud.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the remains were discovered on Tuesday around 9:15 p.m. on the 1500 block of East St. Germain Street. The wooded property was known to be used as a homeless encampment by unhoused individuals.
A person on the property initially called the St. Cloud Police Department, which sent an officer to investigate the area, who found the remains. However, it was later determined that the property was not within St. Cloud’s city limits, requiring the sheriff’s office to assist with the investigation.
The human remains were collected and taken to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and to conduct an autopsy.
While no cause of death has been established at this time, the Sheriff’s Office said evidence they collected indicated the remains had been there for a “substantial period of time.” The Sheriff’s Office said there is no threat to the public at this time.
