Indoor pickleball center opens this week
The largest indoor pickleball center in Sioux Falls is ready to open.
The Jar Pickleball Club will offer eight courts at 3701 S. Western Ave., which previously was used as a warehouse.
“The feedback and buzz have been extraordinary,” general manager Kevin Plank said. “Lots of people are reaching out asking questions.”
The plan is to open Friday. Hours will be 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The Jar will offer both public play and membership options. Founders members have dedicated 24-hour access, capped at 50 spots, with a handful remaining.
There also will be a pro shop that will cover “five or six of the top brands in the pickleball industry in terms of paddles, equipment, backpacks, and we’ll have some apparel,” Plank said.
The business was approved to carry J Pritchard, a premium brand that Plank describes as “the lululemon of pickleball. Very high-end, super-awesome stuff, and we’ll carry a small line of that as well.”
The courts are equipped with technology that can record play, as well as an instant replay option.
“You wave your paddle, and it will replay on the TV on the court,” Plank said.
Memberships offer free open play, varying discounts on court registration and at the pro shop, as well as advanced booking options and discounts on using the technology incorporated into the facility.
Players gravitate to pickleball for its inclusiveness, Plank said.
“You get physical activity along with social interaction and a friendly competition,” he said. “That equates to fun, so people like that atmosphere and environment. You can go from never playing to intermediate level very quickly, and that’s appealing to a lot of people.”
While several staff members have been hired, Plank is still looking for a few more to work the front desk.
The Jar will offer grab-and-go food, including drinks and snacks.
“We’re looking at doing some pre-made wraps and salads to have on hand for people who want to take some food on the go, but otherwise it will be pretty simple,” Plank said.
