Generative AI Helps Cybercriminals Create More Convincing Scam Lures
Scammers are now using AI to automate and polish their scams, producing lures that look so real they can trick even vigilant users. This shift has profound implications for digital trust, brand reputation, and individual safety, signaling a new era of sophisticated online threats.
Traditionally, scammers struggled with poor grammar, unconvincing fake websites, and awkward emails or calls. With Generative AI, they can now generate flawless phishing messages, personalized for specific targets and simulated in the tone of authentic brands.
AI models produce text that matches authentic company styles and avoids the telltale errors that used to give scammers away. These AI-powered lures can be translated into any language, enabling malicious campaigns to reach a global audience.

For example, a scammer can drop an image into a workflow that instantly modifies product visuals, generates a marketing script, creates professional-looking videos, and even produces upbeat, AI-generated reviews.
Each finished “asset” can be posted and promoted across social media, websites, and marketplace listings at scale.
Trend Micro observed in 2025 that romance scams, merchandise fraud, and business impostor schemes have surged, accounting for the majority of AI-enabled scam cases in recent months.
Staying safe against AI-powered scams means adopting new habits and using defensive tools. Users should scrutinize URLs, email senders, and social media profiles, watch out for overly polished but generic reviews, and limit what they share online.
Security tools that scan for deepfakes and malicious websites, such as Trend Micro Deepfake Inspector and ScamCheck, provide advanced protection by identifying subtle signs of AI-generated content or scam activity.
While AI makes scams more convincing, developing vigilance and skepticism for online content is now more essential than ever.
