Performing arts organizations offer favorites old and new
On Dec. 3, The Florida Grand Opera presents “The Sacred Stage” at the Crossbridge Church at 160 Harbor Drive in Key Biscayne featuring opera arias and duets, sacred music, and moving spirituals.
A two-night musical performance of the Americas comes to life under the baton of conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto on Nov. 22, when the New World Symphony Orchestra will feature Juan Pablo Contreras’ Grammy-nominated “Mariachitlán” fusing rhythms of mariachi with original melodies inspired by the Mexican state of Jalisco at the New World Center at 500 17th St.
Scheduled for Dec. 13, the New World Symphony will perform Gustav Mahler’s symphonies of joy and childlike wonder that evokes the gates of heaven at the New World Center. Conductor Manfred Honeck makes his return in a program of orchestral gems from his homeland, Austria.
From Dec. 12 to 28, Miami City Ballet’s “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker” returns at the Arsht Center at 1300 Biscayne Blvd. to transform the stage into a holiday adventure. The festive fun begins with an immersive pre-show experience to the “Land of Sweets,” setting the stage for an unforgettable journey. Over 100 dazzling dancers, a live orchestra, and stagecraft bring the magic of Tchaikovsky’s beloved score to life.
Kicking off Dec. 19, the Adrienne Arsht Center is bringing back the Nu Deco Ensemble featuring Grammy Award winner PJ Morton and friends in an evening of music, community and soul. Guest performers include singers Darrel Walls and Susan Carol and trumpeter Keyon Harrold, part of a Grammy-decorated lineup that spans soul, gospel and jazz. The orchestra will honor the 50th anniversary of Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life with the world premiere of a symphonic suite, and welcome composer and pianist Courtney Bryan for the performance of her piano concerto House of Pianos.
Peter London Global Dance company kicks off its 14th season with “Oneness,” a performance featuring Jamar Roberts, choreographer and former Alvin Ailey principal. Mr. Roberts will perform his world premiere solo, along with new productions of A “Folk’s Tale” and “As An Offering.” The program also includes pianist Jason Moran’s powerful score “Gentle Shifts South,” with world premiere choreography by Mr. London and a performance by former Ailey II artist Annellyse Munroe.
