Five Bergen County Hospitals Earn Top Safety Grades in Fall 2025 Report

Five hospitals in Bergen County scored “A” grades for shielding patients from harm that could’ve been stopped. The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2025 Hospital Safety Grades came out, and these medical centers stood out. This ranking happens twice a year and measures how well hospitals across America keep patients safe from mistakes, accidents, injuries, and infections.

Englewood Hospital & Medical Center earned the top rating. So did Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center, Holy Name Medical Center, Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center. Two of them — Englewood Hospital & Medical Center and Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center — got “Straight A” awards because they’ve kept top grades for at least two years running.

The Leapfrog Group launched this ranking system 25 years back. This watchdog hands out grades — “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” — to hospitals all over the country.

Mistakes, accidents, injuries, and infections in hospitals hurt one out of every four patients who stay overnight. They kill as many as 250,000 people each year. Most of these problems can be stopped, says The Leapfrog Group.

Twenty-one hospitals in New Jersey scored B grades. Ten got C grades, and one got a D grade. No hospital in the state failed with an F grade.

New Jersey ranks third when you look at states with the most A-rated hospitals. Utah grabs first place, and Virginia takes second. Connecticut and North Carolina fill out the top five spots. Four states — Iowa, North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming — don’t have a single A-rated hospital.
