PAOLI, Ind. — An Orange County man has been arrested after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene Sunday afternoon on State Road 150 in rural Orange County, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched around 1:26 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025, on a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle on State Road 150 East. The sheriff’s office said the vehicle left before deputies arrived.
The victim’s name is being withheld “to protect the privacy of the victim,” the department said in a news release. The pedestrian “was alert and verbally responsive at the scene,” according to the sheriff’s office.
After what investigators described as a “lengthy investigation” that used a plethora of investigative tactics, deputies said they were able to identify a suspect vehicle and driver.
The suspect, Shannon Daugherty, was located in neighboring Martin County, where he was taken into custody and then transported to the Orange County Jail, the sheriff’s office said. Daugherty was remanded on a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 6 felony.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The sheriff’s office did not release a specific address for the crash, only that it occurred on State Road 150 East in Orange County. State Road 150, which carries U.S. 150, runs east–west through Orange County, connecting the Paoli area with West Baden Springs and French Lick and continuing toward Shoals to the northwest and New Albany to the southeast. The county seat of Orange County is Paoli, a town of about 3,600 residents.
The sheriff’s office said the case highlights “teamwork and cooperation between deputies and multiple partner agencies.” Critical information developed by Officer Joey Hoffman of the Paoli Police Department helped investigators locate the suspect, according to the release.
