“Slide City” took over where the old playground once sat. This isn’t just swings and slides anymore. A large outdoor gym sprawls across part of the grounds, packed with workout gear for people of any age. Rubber surfacing blankets the entire area. ADA-accessible walkways snake through the space, linking ground-level stations built for kids and grown-ups with different abilities.
“Ocean County Park is one of our most loved and historic parks, and a place that families have been coming to for generations,” said Commissioner Robert S. Arace in a written statement, per NJ.com. “The enhancements we’re celebrating today build on that legacy, ensuring that this park continues to meet the needs of the families who use it every day.”
Money came from the American Rescue Plan Act, signed into law during March 2021 to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. Kompan Inc. drew up the plans. Buzz Burger Construction brought those drawings to life.
This project fits into a wider push to update parks throughout the region. The Department of Parks and Recreation oversees a 4,000-acre system.
New playgrounds have popped up at Patriots County Park in Jackson Township, Freedom Field County Park in Little Egg Harbor, Beaver Dam Creek County Park in Point Pleasant, Tip Seaman County Park in Tuckerton, Lake Shenandoah County Park in Lakewood, Mill Creek County Park in Berkeley Township, and Eno’s Pond County Park in Lacey Township. Crews are still working at Cattus Island County Park in Toms River.
Plans call for another fresh playground at Matthews McKinley Park in Lakewood.
