19-year-old sentenced to 99 years in prison for killing ex-girlfriend in 2023

A man convicted of first- and second-degree murder was sentenced to nearly a century behind bars for killing his ex-girlfriend in 2023.

Fenan Abdurezak Uso, 19, was sentenced to 99 years in prison after he was found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, second-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.

Court records show he will be eligible for supervised release in the future. However, convicts in Minnesota have to serve two-thirds of their sentence before becoming eligible for release, which would mean 66 years behind bars for Uso.

Uso was arrested in 2023 when, as a 17-year-old, he reportedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, 18-year-old Jayden Lee Kline, outside her family’s home in Fridley.

On Dec. 21, 2023, neighbors called 911 after they heard a loud noise and found Kline lying in the street, bleeding from the head, around 4 p.m.

While initially believing she had been hit by a car, investigators soon learned Kline had fallen from a gold van after being shot, upon reviewing surveillance video.

The van was later identified by Kline’s family as the vehicle Uso used to drive around, with police later confirming it was registered to Uso’s mother.

Uso was arrested at a gas station in Burnsville, and a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber pistol was found in the van, court officials said.

In a post-Miranda statement, Uso told investigators he had picked up Kline to go shopping at Rosedale Center. They got into an argument while leaving the mall, so Uso drove back to Kline’s house. He admitted to shooting Kline once and said he “drove off fast because he realized he did something dumb,” according to court records.

While a minor at the time of his arrest, prosecutors requested that Uso be tried as an adult, which was approved ahead of his trial.
