Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has issued an executive order directing the Department of Veteran Affairs to create a statewide Veteran Food Pantry Network to support veterans, service members and their families.
The Governor’s Office cited data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs stating that 13% of veterans who are on health care from the VA have reported food insecurity. Thousands of Minnesota veterans also depend on SNAP, which has been threatened by the shutdown of the federal government.
The MDVA will be able to partner with nonprofits, government agencies and other entities in order to support the network.
Minnesota is home to more than 280,000 veterans, according to the state.
