SPD arrests 5 for Halloween brawl in downtown Shreveport
SPD and city leaders held a press conference on Thursday, November 6, providing an update on the investigation.
Lieutenant Lane Smith with SPD’s Violent Crimes Investigation Unit says the initial fight stemmed from an argument between two individuals the previous weekend at a bar in Downtown Shreveport.
“The video clearly shows, you know, it was somewhat of a consensual fight, which led to an escalated, horrible battery on the victim,” he says.
The joint effort between multiple SPD units and probation and parole personnel led to identifying and locating the suspected police officers who were recorded in several brawls downtown. The five were arrested and face one count of disturbing the peace by fighting.
Wesley, Eiland, and Small were on active probation at the time of the incident and will be held without bond pending further action.
“Their actions will have consequences. Our detectives have worked tirelessly, and we have pursued and will continue to pursue criminal charges and the prosecution to the fullest extent of the law,” says Chief Wayne Smith.
City Council Chairwoman Tabatha Taylor thanked citizens for attending the special session held on November 4, saying this is the first step in ensuring the safety of Downtown Shreveport and the surrounding areas.
“With lip service comes corresponding action. And this is the action that we said that we want our communities safe. This is going to be the narrative that we project. And when you do something in our city, then this is the response,” she shared.
Shreveport police thanked members of the public who came forward and provided tips and videos of the incident, which led to the arrests of those involved.
