Salt Lake County Council votes to keep daycare centers open until May 2026

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — The Salt Lake County Council has voted to keep the four county funded daycare centers open until May 31, 2026.

In a special meeting on Monday morning, the council voted 5-3 to keep the centers open until the end of May.

“I believe that it’s really important for us to give these families some additional time to find alternative arrangements,” Aimee Winder Newton of District 3 said. “It makes sense to have it go until the end of the school year.”

Past motions

During the Oct. 28 Salt Lake County Council meeting, the council voted to close four county funded daycare centers by cutting funding for the parks and recreation licensed childcare program by the end of 2025.

There are currently four licensed centers: Kearns, Magna, Millcreek Activity Center, and Northwest Activity Center.

Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation offers several forms of childcare, and the program under discussion was the licensed county program, which includes all-day preschool, before and after school care, and summer camp.
