Powdered infant formula recalled following infant botulism outbreak

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVNS) — The West Virginia Department of Health has informed the public about a powdered infant formula recall following an outbreak of infant botulism.

According to a press release, after a multistate outbreak of infant botulism, the West Virginia Department of Health (DH), Bureau for Public Health, Office of Epidemiology and Prevention Services, warned the public about a powdered infant formula recall from ByHeart.

Protecting the health of West Virginia infants and families is our highest priority. Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using any recalled ByHeart powdered formula and follow FDA guidance for checking lot numbers, safely disposing of the product, and requesting a replacement.

The press release stated that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall on Saturday, November 8, 2025 with 13 cases were reported across ten states, and while no confirmed cases were identified in the Mountain State, the West Virginia Department of Health said they will keep an eye out.

According to the press release, infant botulism, caused by Clostridium botulinum spores, is a “rare but serious illness.” Symptoms of infant botulism can include constipation, poor feeding, weak cry, drooping eyelids, and muscle weakness, and any infants who show symptoms of infant botulism are advised to be taken to receive medical care.
