LOUISIANA. (
KLFY) — The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed a measles case in a resident of Region 9, who was exposed during international travel.
The patient, whose vaccination status is unknown, was not hospitalized and will remain in isolation until no longer infectious. Public exposure occurred at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on Nov. 9, between 5-8:30 p.m.
This is the third measles case reported in Louisiana in 2025. The first two cases were also travel-associated and occurred in Region 1. Neither of those individuals required hospitalization.
Measles is highly contagious, and approximately 90% of unvaccinated individuals exposed to the virus will become infected. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infectious person leaves an area.
Symptoms of measles include fever, red watery eyes, cough, runny nose and a red blotchy rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body. The rash typically lasts five to six days.
Anyone who was at the airport during the exposure window should verify their vaccination status and monitor for symptoms. If exposed, they should notify healthcare providers before visiting to prevent further spread.
