Murder charges have been filed against a second suspect in the 2022 murder of Marcus Miller in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood.
Geormond Franklin, 21, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the Oct. 11, 2022, shooting. His accomplice, Daeshon Lee Tucker, was convicted of aiding and abetting second-degree murder after being certified as an adult and is serving a 16-year prison sentence.
According to a criminal complaint, Miller and his girlfriend were walking toward Willard’s Liquors at the intersection of Edmund Street and Thomas Avenue when two males in a blue Kia drove on the sidewalk and cut them off. The two searched Miller and demanded money from him before shooting at him. Miller tried to run away but both suspects shot him multiple times.
The shooters got back in the car and drove away. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tucker’s social media activity and cell phone data placed him at the scene of the crime. A video recorded by Tucker a few hours before the shooting showed Franklin wearing a distinctive black hoodie.
While serving a search warrant on a rental property, officers found clothing in a storage bin that matched with what the suspects were wearing in a surveillance recording of the shooting, including the black hoodie. Police asked the renter who the hoodie belonged to, and she pointed them to a social media profile for “Monddo FoeTray” that belonged to Franklin.
Using phone records, police found that Franklin had called Tucker’s phone several times. A search warrant of his social media accounts revealed Franklin had messaged someone else about Tucker’s arrest, saying “they just locked up daedae.”
Ramsey County prosecutors charged Franklin in juvenile court in 2023. At the time, he was already in custody in Chicago on nine felony counts and declined to speak with police about the murder. He was convicted of aggravated vehicular carjacking in Illinois last year and is currently serving a six-year prison sentence.
A nationwide warrant has been issued for Franklin’s arrest. Once extradited to Minnesota, his bail will be set at $2.5 million, charging documents show.
