Van Buren County man arrested in father’s killing

SHIRLEY, Ark. — A Van Buren County man was arrested Thursday after authorities said he killed his father and fled to a hotel in Hot Springs.

Arkansas State Police said deputies from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance after finding 68-year-old Russell B. Branscum dead in his home in the 14000 block of Highway 110 near Shirley.

Detectives with the state police Criminal Investigation Division said Branscum’s son, 31-year-old Brian J. Branscum, was identified as the suspect. He was arrested at a Hot Springs hotel and is facing charges related to his father’s death.

Russell Branscum’s body was taken to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine the cause and manner of death.
