New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthers Week 10 preview

CHARLOTTE (BLACK & BLUE KICKOFF LIVE) — The Panthers are playing some of their best ball in the Dave Canales era, and it should continue in Week 10 with a favorable matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

With a win on Sunday, the Panthers would start 2-0 in the NFC South for the first time since 2022.

In Week 9, the Saints made the move to start rookie quarterback Tyler Shough for the rest of the season and bench Spencer Rattler. In Shough’s debut, he went 15/24 for 176 with one touchdown and one interception in a 34-10 loss against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Panthers’ defense hasn’t been anything special this season, but it did have a great outing last week, holding the Packers to just 13 points. On the season, they rank squarely in the middle (16th), allowing 22.8 points per game. However, the Saints’ offense is only averaging 15.3 points per game, the second fewest in the NFL.

On offense, there aren’t enough good things to be said about Rico Dowdle when he’s been announced as the starter. Since Week 5, his first game as a starter, he leads the league with 652 rushing yards (130.4 per game). On the season as a whole, he ranks third behind Pro Bowlers Jonathan Taylor and James Cook.

Another favorable matchup awaits Dowdle and the rushing attack. The Saints average 129.4 rushing yards allowed per game, bottom 10 in the NFL.

The biggest sign to me that the Panthers will have a good day is the disparity in red-zone efficiency. New Orleans converts only 41.7% of the time in the red zone, second worst in the NFL. Meanwhile, Carolina’s defense is top 10 in the NFL (51.7%) at stopping opponents in the red zone.
