IDPH issues warning against infant formula linked to botulism

ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is warning parents against using a recalled powdered infant formula that has been linked to suspected cases of botulism in Illinois and several other states.

Officials said two Illinois infants are showing symptoms of botulism after consuming ByHeart powdered infant formula.

ByHeart Inc. recalled two lots of Whole Nutrition Infant Formula on Nov. 8. Both formulas are marked with a use-by date of Dec. 1, 2026. This includes:

  • Lot: 206VABP/251261P2 (“Use by 01 Dec 2026”)
  • Lot: 206VABP/251131P2 (“Use by 01 Dec 2026”)

The batch code and use-by date can be found on the bottom of the can.

The IDPH, CDC and FDA are investigating other lots of the ByHeart infant formula. More lots may be recalled based on the results of the investigation.

The IDPH added that ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula is still available for sale online and in-store and only accounts for about 1% of the baby formula market. Because of this, the recall is not expected to create a shortage in infant formula.

Botulism is caused by a bacterial toxin and can lead to life-threatening symptoms like muscle weakness, fatigue, and gastrointestinal distress.

The CDC said infants will initially develop constipation, poor feeding, loss of head control, and difficulty swallowing. If untreated, infant botulism can lead to flaccid paralysis, breathing difficulties and require weeks of hospitalization.

The formula has been linked to suspected botulism cases in ten states. 13 infants were hospitalized after consuming ByHeart formula at some point, the FDA said.

What should I do if I’ve purchased ByHeart infant formula?

There are several steps to take immediately if you have purchased the recalled products. First, stop using the formula immediately, and throw it away. ByHeart will replace those cans at no cost.

The FDA said if your child is experiencing botulism symptoms, contact the doctor right away. To report an illness or adverse event, you can:

You can also email ByHeart at hello@byheart.com or call them at 1-(833)-429-4327.

More information about the investigation can be found on the FDA’s website or the CDC’s website, including guidance for businesses, clinicians and parents/guardians.
