AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) — An Aiken boxing coach is using his passion to fight back against gun violence — one punch at a time.

James Hankerson, founder of the “Gloves Up, Guns Down” youth boxing program, says the idea came to him years ago as a way to steer kids toward discipline and purpose.

“I told my wife I wanted to do something for the community,” Hankerson said. “I didn’t play football or basketball, but I knew how to fight. So I said, if I create a boxing gym, I can teach these kids more than just boxing.”

Hankerson and his wife Brittany have been running the program for nearly a decade, building a family-like environment that blends training with mentorship and faith. The couple’s young fighters are now gearing up for the South Carolina Silver Gloves tournament, set for November 15 in Greenville.

For many of the students, the lessons go far beyond the ring.

“Boxing teaches discipline and hard work,” said one of the fighters. “Our coach always tells us school comes first — then boxing.”

Another added, “He keeps us out of trouble, treats us like his own, and shows us love. It’s not just boxing.”

The team’s success speaks for itself. Last year, eight fighters from Hankerson’s gym placed in the top 10 nationally — and this year, they’re aiming even higher.

“We’re going for that number one spot,” Hankerson said. “In Jesus’ name.”

The South Carolina Silver Gloves tournament begins at noon on November 15 in Greenville. Admission is available at the door.

Those who want to support the program can contact Brittany Hankerson at 803-624-9185 or donate via Cash App at $Brittany1006. The gym operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
