‘It’s not fair to us’: Some NC SNAP users say they only received $4 Friday

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — SNAP benefits will continue to be temporarily blocked for the month of November.

U.S. Supreme Court judge Ketanji Brown Jackson ruled in favor of the Trump administration’s appeal of a federal court order to fully pay out benefits by Friday.

Jackson’s order presses pause on some of the payments until U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit can make a ruling on the administration’s motion to block the order, pending its appeal. It is important to note that this is not a ruling on the legality of the case.

The ruling comes just hours after the U.S.D.A said it would make a full payment after a federal judge ordered the agency to make them a week ago.

This is a result of the continuation of the longest government shut down in the United States’ history, with neither Republicans — who control the House of Representatives, the Senate and the presidency — nor Democrats backing down on their reasoning for not passing a “clean” continuing resolution at this time.

Friday, more than 586,000 North Carolina SNAP users received partial payments.

Faulkner is used to receiving roughly $620 a month.

“First thing just being grateful that I got anything,” SNAP user, Gregg Faulkner said.

Now, Faulkner is having to majorly budget to make $175 last his family of five.

“It’s kind of pinching pennies and seeing what we can buy you know thinking of plans to make sure our kids are fed,” Faulkner said.

Faulkner and other families feeling stuck in the middle of a political battle.

“You’re supposed to be our representatives you’re supposed to be for us, and you should be acting like you are for us,” SNAP user, Summer York said.

York’s family received less than half of what they are used to.

“It’s not fair to us,” York said.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services 190,000 households in North Carolina received $16 or less Friday.

Other families said they only received $4 to $6 Friday and are spending their Friday night looking for extra sources of income.
