Group of BYU fans plan to travel to Texas for Saturday’s football game

PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — A group of 14 friends and BYU students are traveling all the way to Lubbock, Texas this weekend to cheer on the Cougars as they play Texas Tech.

Justin Wood is one of the 14, and he told ABC4 that most of the group have been BYU fans their whole lives, with diehard BYU fans as parents who instilled that love for the team from an early age, taking them to games at Lavell Edwards Stadium.

“We’re super excited for the game,” Wood said. “We got tickets and booked everything back in May and June, so we’re ready to roll now after a good season for BYU and Texas Tech.”

When asked just why they would fly all the way down to Lubbock from Provo, Wood said, “We’re too big of BYU fans, that’s probably the best answer.”

“We’re super passionate BYU fans, football fans, other sports as well, but we’ve now created a tradition where it’s kind of an annual thing where we pick at least one road game to travel to, and we get a big group of us to go, so we’ve got 14 of us guys going down this weekend to cheer on the Cougs,” he explained.

Tanner Demann, another member of the group, said, “I expect that it will be exciting no matter who wins, but I expect the Cougars to come out on top, for sure.”

Demann said that any time they go to a road game, they like to walk around the opposing team’s campus and get a feel for their traditions before the game. “It’s been cool to see different places we go, the different atmospheres.”

The group has planned to have a full day before the game to hang out in Lubbock and explore, and then they will be flying back to Utah the day after the game.

When asked how they choose which road games to go to, Demann joked, “Justin kind of chooses and we just follow. Closer is easier, obviously, but also like, we knew this would be a good game, so it’s a good one to go to.”

Members of the group have also been to games at Wyoming, Iowa State, and Colorado.

BYU is currently ranked 8th and is 8-0. The Cougars will play 9th-ranked Texas Tech at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday at 10 a.m. Texas Tech is currently 8-1.

“Go cougs!” Demann concluded, and his cry was echoed by his friends.
