VISALIA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) — Visalia Unified’s State of the District honored more than six decades of achievement on Thursday, including highlighting major student achievements.

“We have over 13,500 students benefitting from extended learning opportunities with 16 different community partners helping these students extend and expand their learning beyond the school day,” Superintendent Kirk Shrum said.

Shrum says achievements include a 92% graduation rate and over 300 students in internships.

Academic scores from the recent California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) state assessment also continue to improve.

“These numbers represent more than progress. They represent partnership. Learning doesn’t happen in isolation. It thrives when students are empowered, families are engaged, and communities are connected,” Shrum said.

He says the success stems from upgrades to classrooms, including lighting and computer systems.

“When we focus on our spaces and when we focus on making them modernized and that you walk into them and kids feel good about being there,” Shrum said.

Shrum says the work is not over.

Through research, design and monitoring improvements, the district presents a five-year strategic plan called “Visalia Forward 2030.”

“Our school board is committed to transparency and accountability by setting ambitious five-year goals for our student priority outcomes,” Shrum said.

Board President Joy Naylor praises the district’s work, sharing how it made a lasting impact on her son.

“One of my sons was at San Jose State and he was in a writing class and the teacher got up and held his paper and said, ‘now this is what good writing looks like.’ Thank you. Visalia Unified teachers,” Naylor said.
