State Rep. Tehmi Chassion buys groceries for people in need

SUNSET, La. (KLFY) — A state legislator is covering the cost of groceries for those in need amid the ongoing government shutdown.

State Rep. Tehmi Chassion (D-Lafayette) said he is using his campaign funds and salary to assist people struggling to afford groceries as the shutdown impacts their financial stability.

He has been following the Makin Groceries Mobile Market through Lafayette and beyond to provide this support.

“With SNAP benefits and just hard times overall, it’s just tough to get by,” Chassion said. “We’re still being paid. I said I couldn’t think of any possible way if I’m still going to be paid, but people are furloughed right now.”

Chassion said he believes that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact on people’s lives.

“I’m thinking to myself like something so small, but it means something to folks to get some more groceries if you needed just anything to help out, man,” Chassion said. “Life is short.”
