Settlement reached with defunct Woodbury dental clinic; consumers will be able to claim refunds

Consumers who used a now-defunct Woodbury dental clinic will be able to obtain refunds for fees they paid for services that were not provided.

The settlement between Attorney General Keith Ellison and Woodbury Dental Arts will enable consumers to obtain refunds from the Consumer Protection Restitution Account in the Attorney General’s Office.

The Attorney General’s office is currently working to identify patients who may be eligible for refunds and will contact those affected.

“All too often, when we catch scammers, they don’t have money left to pay back the people they cheated,” said Attorney General Ellison. “That almost happened when Woodbury Dental Arts abruptly closed up shop and declared bankruptcy after accepting down payments for costly dental procedures they would never provide. I’m glad we can compensate those Minnesotans who lost so much when Woodbury Dental Arts shut its doors.”

Woodbury Dental Arts closed its doors in March 2024, without providing notice to patients, leaving some with unfinished implant treatments.

Dr. Marko Kamel, owner and dentist of Woodbury Dental Arts, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS in 2024 that he closed the clinic because his license was suspended and he had depleted his financial resources.

At the time 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS interviewed Kamel, he claimed his suspension was for “minor reasons.”

However, the Attorney General’s Office stated that Kamel was suspended based on a probable-cause determination that his treatment of two patients violated the MN Board of Dentistry’s practice act.

Kamel is not allowed to practice dentistry in Minnesota. If he wants to practice in the future, he must wait a minimum of 10 years before applying for reinstatement.

Anyone who believes they are entitled to a refund from Woodbury Dental Arts should contact the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office by calling (651) 296-3353 (Metro area) or (800) 657-3787 (Greater Minnesota), or by submitting a complaint on the Attorney General’s website.
