Original Story:

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — Over 18,000 people in Salt Lake County lost power due to an outage in Millcreek and Holladay this afternoon. The majority of customers have had their power restored, but more than 5,000 are waiting for repairs.

According to Rocky Mountain Power (RMP), there was an outage affecting around 18,521 customers in Millcreek and Holladay. Those affected live in zip codes 84124, 84117, 84115, 84106, and 84107.

As of 2:56 p.m., just under 13,000 customers are back on power. RMP says 5,537 customers are still facing power outages. Eskelsen said crews will continue to work on getting the power back on for as many as possible, and will update the estimated restoration time as they learn more.

Currently, RMP is estimating that the outages will be repaired by 10:30 p.m. tonight. Those who want updates can text “STAT” to 759677 or visit RMP’s outage webpage.

Both outages were reported just before 2 p.m., and Rocky Mountain Power says that crews have been notified and the outage is due to the loss of a substation.

According to Dave Eskelsen, spokesperson for RMP, the “transmission supply into the substation was interrupted,” and crews are there looking over the situation. While they work to fix it, dispatchers have been isolating the area and trying to get as many customers back on as possible

“We appreciate our customers’ patience when difficulties happen,” Eskelsen shared, adding that their crews work as quickly and as safely as they can to get the power back on.
