WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — This past weekend, a Prairie Grove woman faced the possibility of not seeing her husband for a long time after he was arrested and taken to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center out of state.

On Nov. 1, Waldin Sanchez, 27, was arrested in Prairie Grove after a car accident and now faces charges for driving without a license and careless driving.

Maria Verde runs Del Rio Supermarket in Prairie Grove alongside Sanchez, her husband.

On Oct. 31, Sanchez allegedly drove off the road and hit a utility box, according to the Prairie Grove Police Department. When officers arrived, they smelled alcohol, and because of a language barrier, he was taken to the Washington County Detention Center for sobriety testing.

Sanchez failed numerous sobriety tests, and he refused to take a breathalyzer test. Once he was booked, authorities checked his immigration status. They found he was here illegally and was later taken by ICE before being moved to a detention center in Louisiana.

“He got arrested on Friday. He went to Louisiana on Monday, like, immediately,” Verde said.

Verde said she now has to run the business she built with her husband alone and take care of her three children.

She shared her story on social media and was soon flooded with messages of support.

Jessie Kersh Hunt, a regular at the Del Rio Supermarket, said she immediately felt empathy for Maria and her entire family.

“The whole business and that being your livelihood simultaneously not taken away, but just made exponentially more difficult because you’ve lost 50% of your operations,” Hunt said.

Verde said she will continue to fight for her husband and said her business will remain open. She said she will sell tamales to support the legal fees for her husband while awaiting his court date.
