BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Mayor-President Sid Edwards joined military veterans, their families, and community leaders this morning for a breakfast at the Main Library on Goodwood.
Veterans and their families were treated to a performance of “America the Beautiful” by trumpeter George Bell over breakfast and cake.
Elena Branzaru, Chair of the Mayor’s Advisory Council of Veterans Affairs, said she plans this event all year.
“George Bell is an amazing person. He played here three years ago, but that trumpet, I hope you captured it, that trumpet is amazing, it takes my breath away,” Branzaru declared.
Edwards expressed his joy to be a part of the day, which provided a sense of belonging and fellowship for military service members and their loved ones.
“I’ve always believed that the strongest teams are built on sacrifice, discipline, and heart, and that’s exactly what each of you represents,” Edwards said.
The morning included the national anthem, the pledge of allegiance and guest speakers, providing outreach to soldiers.
“A lot of times, the veterans may be the ones who are unseen. They don’t tell you what is actually going on in their lives. They may not be able to reach out, but as today indicated, there are a number of different groups that have tons of resources. We want to be able, which is one of our missions is to be able to connect these veterans and connect these activities,” Branzaru said.
“Days like this, we get multiple generations of veterans together, you know, like we did the cake cutting ceremony, where the oldest veteran gives a piece of cake to the youngest veteran, symbolic of the passing of knowledge, the passing of the torch to those that have come after them. Getting this many generations in one spot is amazing,” Major Lucas Culver with the U.S. Marine Corps declared.
Veterans Day is set for Tuesday, November 7, this year.
