House of Heroes celebrates 25 years of honoring those who served

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — A quarter century of service celebrated Thursday in the very city where it all began.

At the Country Club of Columbus, House of Heroes marked its 25th Anniversary honoring military and public safety veterans whose homes, and lives, have been restored through volunteer service.

The moment of inspiration came to Wayne Anthony in 1999 while at a leadership conference. He says he was looking for a team building project at would allow everyone in the group to feel like they made a difference. This idea sparked what would become a national movement more than 2,400 homes repaired across 18 states.

“The organization has restored dignity and safety in the homes of over a thousand deserving veterans.” Congressman Sanford Bishop said, “These repairs were valued at more than $24 million, but there can be no value placed on what our veterans have meant to our country.”

City leaders reflected on the program’s deep local roots, born from a simple mission: to help and honor those who have served. “You have thinkers you have those who do,” said Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson. “Very rarely you stumble across somebody who thinks these things up, and then does them.”

From one home in Columbus to thousands nationwide, House of Heroes continues its mission giving back to those who gave their all.

The organization says it’s now looking toward its next 25 years, with plans to expand service projects across more congressional districts in 2026.
