UPDATE (Nov. 7, 11:40 a.m.): News 5 has learned more about a deadly Thursday night collision between an Amtrak train and a car in Gautier, Mississippi.
The crash happened at about 8:16 p.m., according to Gautier Police Chief David Bever.
“According to witnesses, the (train) crossing was down and the vehicle was driving around them when it crashed with the train,” Bever said.
The driver, Tavares Johnson Jr., a 29-year-old from Gautier, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene, according to Bever.
The Amtrak train was en route from New Orleans to Mobile and carrying passengers.
No one was injured on the train in the crash.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is assisting the Gautier Police Department with crash reconstruction, Bever said.
An autopsy and toxicology tests will determine if drugs or alcohol are involved, he said.

GAUTIER, Miss. (WKRG) — One person is dead after an Amtrak train and car collide in Gautier, Miss. Thursday night.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the accident happened on Ladnier Road, just south of Highway 90.
MHP arrived around 9:15 p.m. after getting a call from the Gautier Police Department.
The Southern Rail Commission confirms it was one of the Mardi Gras Service trains that was enroute to Mobile from New Orleans. Amtrak reports all 55 passengers and four crew members on board the train are unharmed.
On Amtrak’s website, the train was scheduled to arrive in Mobile around 9:14 p.m.
