CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) – The State of West Virginia has now released more than $11 million to food banks to help them provide assistance to those in need amid the SNAP benefits pause.

Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Wednesday that another $2.5 million released Thursday brings the overall total to $11.1 million. The governor says he has authorized the State to release up to $14.1 million, meaning the State has $3 million additional dollars it can release should the SNAP pause and government shutdown continue for a longer period of time.

“Every day we’re looking at the situation closely,” said Morrisey. “At this time, it was prudent to send another infusion to the food banks so that they stay ahead of the demand. As the Schumer Shutdown continues, we’re going to keep working to ensure that no one goes hungry.”

On Thursday, Morrisey also said that if the shutdown does continue, he “will not hesitate to call the legislature” in an effort to get more funding.

Last week, the governor authorized the West Virginia National Guard to provide food banks and food pantries across the state with additional manpower for their logistics and distribution efforts.

“We stand ready to support our state partner agencies, local food banks and non-profit organizations with critical logistical support to assist West Virginia families and individuals who face food insecurity,” said Maj. Gen. Jim Seward, Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard.
