SALT LAKE CITY (
ABC4) — Four Salt Lake City Council races are taking place in the 2025 election. Some races are coming down to the wire.
Unlike most municipal elections, Salt Lake City elections follow a ranked choice voting system. At the polls, voters ranked their candidates in order of preference. If a candidate is selected as the first-choice candidate by more than 50% of voters, they win. But if not, the ranked choice process kicks in.
The following results are unofficial and based on reporting from state election officials.
District 1
In a close race, Victoria Petro is leading Stephen Otterstrom for the District 1 seat on the Salt Lake City Council. With 92% of precincts reporting, Petro leads by just four points.
Petro is the incumbent and has served on the council since 2021.
District 3
In another ranked choice contest, Chris Wharton, the incumbent, holds a commanding 22-point lead over Blake McClary in the election’s third round. Liddy Huntsman-Hernandez trails Wharton by 28 points.
David Berg and Jake Seastrand were eliminated during earlier rounds.
District 5
Erika Carlsen has won the Salt Lake City Council District 5 seat, defeating Amy Hawkins and Vance Hansen.
With no incumbent in the race, Carlsen won by almost 1,500 votes.
District 7
Sarah Young ran unopposed.
All results are unofficial as of Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025.
