Rouses Markets rounding up to phase out the penny

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Rouses Markets announced it will adopt a new penny rounding policy due to U.S. Mint production changes.

According to Rouses Markets, the federal government is working to phase out the penny. The U.S. Mint has made its final order of penny blanks and will stop producing the coin when those blanks run out.

Rouses will continue to accept pennies as payment. However, once a store exhausts its remaining pennies, cash transactions will be rounded up to the nearest nickel in the customer’s favor.

For instance, if a customer is owed $0.91, then Rouses will round up and return $.95. If a customer is owed $.47, then Rouses will round up and return $.50.

Rouses spokespeople said only cash transactions will be affected by this policy. Over 7,000 Rouses employees were trained to adopt this new policy.
