Louisiana agencies partner to combat New Orleans homeless encampment fires

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Agencies across the state of Louisiana have partnered to address a growing concern of homeless encampment fires across New Orleans.

Officials with the Louisiana State Police report that in recent weeks, there have been recurring fires beneath “critical infrastructure.”

Reportedly, in some areas, the fires have damaged bridges, causing Department of Transportation and Development officials to close on-ramps for extensive evaluations. Additionally, troopers said the fires pose a threat to electrical systems, the health and safety of those living in the encampment and motorists.

“Ongoing damage to the interstate system can also impede the vital flow of emergency response and essential supplies into the New Orleans metropolitan area,” said LSP Sergeant Kate Stegall.

On Nov. 5, Stegall says LSP-Troop NOLA, DOTD, the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshals Office and the City of New Orleans Office of Homeless Services collaborated to address the risks and safeguard the city.

They will do so through outreach efforts and informing residents in the area of applicable Louisiana law, which prohibits the obstruction of public passages. Information and alternative resources will also be available.

On Nov. 7, the agencies will work to relocate individuals in high-risk areas to safer locations and begin cleanup efforts to reduce hazards to infrastructure.
