The Alabama Department of Transportation says this road closure is part of the Highway 280 widening project. Starting the night of Friday, Nov. 14, crews will begin placing beams over 280 for the new Pumphouse Road bridge.
According to the state, installation will happen overnight from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. November 14-17. ALDOT says both east and west bound lanes of 280 will close at 11 p.m. on the 14th. The Eastbound lanes will not reopen again until 6 a.m. on Monday, November 17. However, the Westbound lanes will reopen at 5 each morning through the weekend.
“The long-term benefit will outweigh the short-term delays. So we need motorists to take alternate routes,” said DeJarvis Leonard, ALDOT East Central Region Engineer. “There is a signed detour which will be Lakeshore to I-65 to I-459 back to 280. That will be the signed detour for these closures.”
ALDOT says while it is expecting traffic delays from this, the road will only be closed at the Pumphouse Road bridge.
“We will start reducing lanes, if you’re traveling Eastbound before you get to Green Valley, and also Westbound before you get to Dolly Ridge,” Leonard said. “But that will be opportunities for any motorists who get into the construction area to U-turn and come back. But we’re asking motorists to take alternate routes.”
ALDOT says this is phase one of the Pumphouse Road bridge reconstruction project. The state expects more lane closures in this area of 280 in the new year.
