Busted! New helicopter crack down on local shoulder riders

CHICAGO (WGN) – There’s an eye in the sky being used to crack down on a common complaint: Drivers who dodge traffic by using the shoulder of a highway.

“There’s virtually nothing we haven’t heard,” said Cook County Sheriff’s officer Kevin Suchocki after curbing a car that was first spotted thanks to an airborne assist.

The driver claimed he had an urgent need to use the bathroom.

The Cook County Sheriff has a new $11M helicopter. It’s been used to track carjackers and other fleeing suspects. Now it’s also being deployed over Chicago-area expressways to spot shoulder riders and radio their description down to officers on the ground.

The department has issued 175 citations at $250 each in recent months.

“To say this is shooting fish in a barrel is an understatement,” said Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.
