When the food pantry opened at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, cars lined up around the building, highlighting the significant impact on residents in South Carolina.
“We have 12 individuals that have been integrated into the Harvest [Hope] Food Bank process here, that are assisting,” said BG William Hollingsworth, deputy commander of the SC State Guard.
The state government office is working at both the Greenville and Columbia food distribution centers, providing assistance in packing boxes, preparing food items, and possibly managing traffic control.
The distribution being held is a response to the 36-day government shutdown — the longest in history — which has delayed November SNAP benefits for many families.
“Normally we do that in times of manmade or natural disasters, but in this case, it is a different type mission,” Hollingsworth continued,
Greenville resident Karin Staring said the shutdown has posed challenges, even causing her to ration food.
“I have EBT,” she told 7NEWS. “And I don’t have any money coming in.”
Staring said she also plans to ration the food she received from Harvest Hope on Wednesday.
Shirley Bowens, another resident, shared her difficult choices, choosing to spend her money on gas or food.
“It’s the only way I’mma get here,” she said. “You know I think ill be able to make it to get back home but that’s where I’ll be, because I’ll have some food.”
Harvest Hope Food Bank will continue its operations on Thursday and Friday, and from Nov. 10-14.
With ongoing support from the state guard, the food bank aims to alleviate some of the burdens faced by families during this challenging time.
