Man who drove away from police, leading to a standoff, sentenced to nearly 9 years in prison

A man accused of having a standoff with the police in north Minneapolis, was sentenced to over eight years in prison on Tuesday.

Charles Henry Foss, 35, was convicted of first-degree burglary and fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, receiving a 105-month sentence (8.75 years). Additional charges against Foss, including four second-degree assault charges and another first-degree burglary charge, were dismissed.

Foss’ charges were placed against him after he was allegedly spotted in a stolen vehicle on July 30. The vehicle, which police attempted to pull over, fled.

A helicopter was flown to track Foss’ vehicle and though multiple attempts were made to stop the vehicle, Foss continued to evade capture for some time.

He eventually drove into an alley, where the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office was able to box the vehicle in. Foss left the vehicle and entered a nearby house, where he reportedly grabbed a knife and threatened the occupants.

Following a three-hour standoff, Foss surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody.
