Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens announced Avery Bankston, 38, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Tyrone Wilson, 50.
According to Owens, Hinds County deputies and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) responded to a call at the detention center on February 23, 2023. They found Wilson deceased in the cell he shared with Bankston.
Investigators said surveillance video showed only Bankston and Wilson entering and exiting the cell. The video also showed a struggle under the cell door, movement on the floor and a red-sleeved limb reaching from the cell. Bankston was seen using a white cloth to clean the inside window and door of the cell.
Owens said Bankston was being held on burglary charges at the time of the homicide.
After the guilty verdict, Bankston was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
