2 killed, 1 injured in head-on crash on Southwest Side

CHICAGO — A crash on the city’s Southwest Side left two people dead and a third injured on Tuesday afternoon, Chicago police say.

According to police, the crash unfolded just before 3 p.m. in the 2800 block of West 87th Street in the Wrightwood neighborhood.

Officers said the victims, a 73-year-old man who was driving an SUV with a 76-year-old passenger, were headed east along 87th Street when the driver attempted to make a northbound turn onto California Avenue.

Police said that as the SUV driver made the turn, his vehicle was allegedly struck head-on by a 21-year-old man who was headed west along 87th Street in a sedan.

Following the crash, the 73-year-old man and his 76-year-old passenger were transported to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The driver of the sedan suffered an injury to his right leg and was transported to the hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

Officers said the driver of the sedan was later issued a citation for failure to reduce speed.

Authorities have not yet identified anyone involved in the crash and an investigation is now underway by CPD’s Major Accident Investigation Unit.
