Shreveport City Council to address recent violence issues

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — A series of violent altercations erupted in downtown Shreveport in the early hours following Halloween, prompting city leaders to call for enhanced public safety measures.

The fights occurred at the intersection of Spring Street (La. Hwy 1) and Texas Street, resulting in several arrests, according to Corporal Chris Bordelon of the Shreveport Police Department. Authorities are seeking public assistance to identify all individuals involved.

“There were some images that did show some serious violence, individuals being stomped and things of that nature,” said Corporal Chris Bordelon. “We have already identified some of the individuals in question, and are working to determine the proper charges and make sure that we can facilitate an investigation that ends in the prosecution of these cases.”

Mayor Tom Arceneaux condemned the violence, stating, “This kind of behavior is absolutely unacceptable in our city; we will not let a small number of bad actors threaten the progress we’re making downtown.”

City Council Chairwoman Tabatha Taylor emphasized the need for immediate action, saying, “And so what we’ve seen when we see all the brutal attacks of individuals is definitely a cause for immediate concern. And we need to take immediate action.”

City leaders are taking steps to address the violence, with the Shreveport City Council scheduled to hold a special session to discuss public safety measures. The meeting will take place on November 4 at 10 a.m. at Government Plaza.

Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor expressed her determination to prevent such incidents from hindering the city’s progress, stating, “And whatever your beef is, it’s not with the innocent individuals that drive or walk or in trying to enjoy Shreveport, Louisiana. And we’re not going to allow you to hold Shreveport hostage in its progress.”

The city council’s upcoming session aims to address the immediate concerns raised by the violent incidents and explore solutions to ensure public safety in Shreveport.
