ALEXANDRIA, La. (WNTZ) — The Alexandria Museum of Art has opened its newest exhibition, “EMERGE: New Orleans Artists from the Saratoga Collection,” featuring works created by artists who lived and worked in New Orleans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The exhibition showcases a wide range of mediums – including mixed media sculpture, film, paintings, and prints – reflecting the resilience and creativity of the city’s artist community in the wake of one of the most devastating events in Louisiana’s history.

The Saratoga Collection originated through a collaboration between artist and curator Terrence Sanders-Smith and architect and developer Marcel Wisznia. Named after the downtown New Orleans apartment building where it was housed from its inception until 2021, the collection was donated to the Alexandria Museum of Art that same year. Sanders-Smith, who has childhood ties to Central Louisiana, encouraged Wisznia to entrust the collection to a museum that would benefit from an expanded body of contemporary works.

An opening reception for the exhibition will take place Friday, Nov. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum. Both Sanders-Smith and Adam Falik, author of the exhibition catalog and labels, will attend.

The following morning, Saturday, Nov. 8, the museum will host a Curator’s Tour from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. led by Sanders-Smith and Falik. The event is free and open to the public as part of the museum’s Free Second Saturday Admission program.
