TEXAS (KFDX/KJTL) — Wichita County was represented among 18 county judges and commissioners across the state in the second session of the Commissioners Court Leadership Academy in Corpus Christi.

The Commissioners Court Leadership Academy is a two-year program consisting of four sessions, each lasting multiple days, in various locations across Texas and Washington, D.C., designed to give attendees a chance to increase their knowledge of county government, develop communication skills, and enhance their advocacy abilities.

Wichita County Commissioner Jeff Watts said that connecting with other leaders benefits him and Wichita County in numerous ways.

“It allows us to enhance ideas and learn about the innovative approaches being utilized in other counties,” Watts said. “Many counties are going through change and experiencing growth. Learning to effectively manage this change will allow us to grow wisely.”

Local officials across the state are being challenged to work with limited resources, increased demand for services, new technology, changing demographics and countless other issues.

The V.G. Young Institute of County Government, part of the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service, hosts the Leadership Academy. It works to meet the educational needs of county officials and the public by anticipating, identifying and addressing challenges faced by Texas county government.
