Sunday Conversation: Longtime Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones talks about re-election bid, termination of deputy who will challege him

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Lee County, Ala., Sheriff Jay Jones has announced his intention to run for re-election in 2026, seeking his eighth term in office.

There was a controversy last week as Jones terminated Deputy Cam Hunt after Hunt told the sheriff he intended to run against him.

Jones sat down with WRBL’s Chuck Williams to talk about his nearly 50-year career in law enforcement and his last 27 years as sheriff of the growing East Alabama county. Jones also talked about why he terminated Hunt and the precedent for that move.
