CHICAGO (WGN) — Chicago police say charges are pending against a man who the department believes shot a 23-year-old woman in Edgewater while she was in her vehicle.

The shooting stems from a road rage incident, according to Chicago Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th Ward). While it’s unclear how the argument unfolded, police say the victim survived the shooting but suffered serious injuries.

News of a shooting investigation that spanned two seperate locations left some Edgewater residents, such as Darryl Wakefield, stunned by the development.

“It’s getting a little rough now, but I am surprised,” Wakefield told WGN-TV.

Police say around 9 a.m., near the intersection of Broadway and Hollywood, a 23-year-old woman and an armed man argued. CPD added that the unidentified suspect allegedly opened fire in the victim’s direction, with a bullet striking her in the left shoulder.

First responders rushed the victim to St. Francis Hospital in serious condition.

Police have not yet announced charges in connection with the road rage shooting, but confirm that officers took the suspect into custody shortly after the incident.

Witnesses told WGN-TV crews the shooting occurred while the victim was inside her vehicle, some distance away from the nearby Shell gas station. The victim managed to drive away before pulling over less than half a mile away.

Around 10 a.m., cameras rolled as Chicago police investigated a vehicle with a bullet hole and a broken mirror near Ardmore and Sheridan.

Authorities report no additional injuries.
