Charges filed in San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy’s killing

The man accused of shooting and killing a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputy last week has been charged with his murder, as well as for the violent crime that led to the original 911 call.

On Monday, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office filed multiple felony charges Angelo Jose Saldivar, 47, of San Bernardino.

Saldivar is accused of shooting and killing 28-year-old deputy Andrew Nunez after he and fellow deputies responded for a report of a domestic violence incident at a home in Rancho Cucamonga.

On Oct. 27, several witnesses reported that Saldivar was at the home on the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive and became violent with his ex-spouse. Deputies arrived on scene and Saldivar allegedly opened fire immediately, hitting Nunez once in the head and fatally wounding him.

Saldivar then led multiple agencies on a high-speed motorcycle pursuit on the 210 Freeway, before ultimately being stopped after an off-duty deputy driving his own vehicle swerved into his bike and sent him flying onto the asphalt.

Saldivar was hospitalized due to injuries he suffered in the crash, but was later arrested and booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

On Monday, a week after Nunez’s tragic passing, Saldivar was formally charged with his murder.

Additionally, he faces charges for battery on a spouse, attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, evading an officer and multiple gun crimes, as well as multiple gun-related special allegations.

Saldivar remains in custody without bail, and will make his initial court appearance once medically cleared, officials said.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the Sheriff’s Department says additional charges may be added down the road.

A six-year veteran of the department, Nunez leaves behind a wife, a 2-year-old daughter and another child on the way.
