Captain Bennett, a U.S. Air Force pilot and Youngsville native, was killed in action during the Vietnam War in 1972. He received the Medal of Honor posthumously for his heroic actions in saving his co-pilot’s life.
“It means a lot to me to know that he’s not forgotten,” said Angela Bennett-Engele, Bennett’s daughter. “It’s important to remember our service members.”
“Lots of work, lots of disappointments, lots of time. But it all came together,” said Bill Miller, the project organizer.
“What he did gave me 53 more years of my lifetime,” said Michael Brown, a survivor of the crash Bennett saved him from.
The dedication ceremony featured a flyover of vintage warplanes, a 21-gun salute, and a flag presentation to Bennett’s family. This event was the result of years of collaboration between local veterans and the city.
The monument serves as a permanent reminder of Captain Steven L. Bennett’s courage and sacrifice, ensuring his legacy lives on for future generations.
